There are a number of tips and tricks in the process that you learn by doing. Drill the triple tree pin hole, same warnings apply here. You could take it to the range too I suppose though the triple tree is a pretty light press fit. This is a good time to center the rear drum and using a laser boresighter check the front sight position. Also, the barrel is HARD and it is an only a partially round hole, it breaks the edge of the barrel. Drill for barrel pin, 5mm I think is standard and its a light press fit in the trunnion. It may be peened over or tack welded in and may not survive being removed. I would just use the cocking tube as a index to tell if it was straight to me since its a factory HK gun.Īnyway, this is the order I would proceed in: If you want to get fancy you can use a laser bore sight. The sight just line up vertically and press on and pin. The pin will be press fit tight so again youll want to hit it with a press to punch it in. However in reality I have pinned new barrels in old trunions and used the original pin after drilling the barrel. You would drill out the trunion and barrel to slightly oversized and then pin with a oversized pin. The proper school of thought on this is to use a slightly oversized barrel pin.
Once this is done you will pin the barrel. Youll have to repeat pressing it in and possible have to press it out some. Use a penny or some other soft metal and place it on the muzzle so you dont damage it when pressing. I would use a heavy tube that could go through the receiver and rest in the trunion. Again make sure you brace the trunion and not the receiver. I didnt look to see if your front sight is also welded, but some are. I personally wouldnt try to salvage the front sight off the old barrel. A press generally comes with some heavy thick steel you use that to brace. You will need something long enough to go through the receiver to press the barrel out. Well, first I actually need to GET a barrel. So is there a specific order of events to getting the barrel out? Thats the first thing I need to do. This is also the first MP5 I have ever owned but I have a pretty firm grasp on the firearm itself and its functionality.

I can't find any specific information about how to do this, nor are there any videos showing how. I'm very mechanically inclined and figure complex things out fairly quickly but I still need help with the particulars of how to do this. What I need is experienced advice from someone who has done this rather than just, "Just use a hydraulic press and a drill press." Now there seems to be quite a bit of disagreement amongst a few of you about the difficulty of this task which made me hesitant but I've decided to take the plunge anyway.
